Charlotte's air quality ranks as the second worst in the Southeast according to the American Lung Association, as reported by the Charlotte Observer
Over 50% of the air you breathe inside your home comes from below, in your crawlspace or basement. This is called the stack effect.
And it can smell and stink!
Most crawl spaces are dirt floors that allow water vapor, odors, and gases to move from the ground into your home.
Do you have consistent headaches, allergies, or sneezing? It could be coming from pollutants and those pollutants don't stay under your home. Effects of mold, viruses, bacteria, germs...they all thrive in a highly humid and dark environment.
Moisture and damp air feed mold and mildew, which love to grow in dark and humid spaces. As mold grows, it releases spores into the air. These spores are a major allergen. Breathing them in has even been linked to an increased risk of developing asthma.
If you think treating the mold is the answer, you're wrong. Even dead mold is an allergen. A disinfectant is not the answer. The only solution is to remove the mold.
The vents that you think are allowing cross-ventilation are your enemy. They allow humidity, moisture, pollen, dust, and all sorts of bad things into your crawl space, sometimes even animals...and then up into your home. Again, Charlotte ranks in the top of worst air quality in the country. Don't let it into your home.
